Europe invests to boost the uptake of robotic technologies by start-ups and SMEs
There is a clear need to stimulate European start-ups and SMEs in the robotics sector to develop novel and innovative technology with the potential to open new markets at the international level. The aim of the Robot Union acceleration program is to discover, support and fund innovative projects in the robotics industry. Robot Union will address the two major barriers that hinder the development and market uptake of robotics technologies for entrepreneurs and start-ups: the elevated setup costs and the lack of awareness of potential benefits of robotics.
This is a unique opportunity for the SMEs to use robotics and enter the world of artificial intelligence. “The Robot Union accelerator will bring the top researchers and entrepreneurs together to stimulate new robotics innovations in Europe”, says the Technical Coordinator of the project Ali Muhammad at VTT. The 20 start-ups and SMEs, selected in each of the 2 open calls, to be launched by Robot Union, will enter into an acceleration program of 6 to 12 months. Each selected company will receive up to 223,000 euros equity free for its initial funding stages.

Project coordinator and managing director of the Brussels Photonics Team (BPHOT) at VUB, Professor Hugo Thienpont explains: “ACTPHAST 4.0 is a game-changer in revitalizing European manufacturing, and as one of the vital catalysts to the digitization of European industry. ACTPHAST 4.0 offers new opportunities to boost photonics innovation in Europe at a scale and with a leveraging factor that is unprecedented.” “The coaching support services for SMEs we offer are a vital complementary action running alongside the deep innovation interventions. We make sure that the companies are fully “primed” before, during and after they engage with ACTPHAST 4.0 on innovation projects related to their product so they can accelerate on all fronts towards commercial success,” Professor Thienpont said. Breaking Down Barriers The ACTPHAST 4.0 model is unique in a European context in that it is set up to provide a single entry point into a fully integrated prototyping supply chain across the broad spectrum of photonics technology platforms. In order to develop photonic-enhanced products, a complex
process requiring one or more expensive technology supply chains, including design, prototyping, characterization, manufacturing and testing, packaging and integration needs to be followed. Access to scaling-up facilities such as pilot lines, or companies who will take up the low-cost mass manufacturing of the new product can be difficult to find. “The majority of SMEs today,” central outreach coordinator, Peter Doyle said, “do not have access to experts in the business and technical aspects of innovating with photonics that can work continuously with them to incubate their particular innovation.” “The highly-skilled people that support the execution of the innovation with the most advanced photonics technology platforms are often out of reach to a small business. SMEs may not be able to take the financial risk to recruit these experts or invest in diverse technological facilities that are crucial in photonics-driven innovation processes,” said Doyle. ACTPHAST makes this cutting-edge technology and expertise available in a subsidized format to any European company – with a particular emphasis on SMEs – for the purposes of collaborating on photonics innovation projects which will have a substantial impact on the companies’ business growth in terms of new revenues and job creation. Siemens wins first place for “Best Idea Management”
Siemens was awarded top honors for its idea management program at the German congress of the Zentrum Ideenmanagement (“Idea Management Center”), which took place in Fulda over the last two days. Within the framework of “3i ideas – initiatives – innovations,” as the Siemens idea management program has been called

Honda has already taken the first step in helping this vision become a reality with the development of the Power Manager unit. The system enables the collection and distribution of electricity between the grid, homes and businesses, and electric vehicles. The Power Manager units will be used to help stabilise the grid at times of either short or surplus supply and will work by aggregating and distributing energy to and from the grid through solar panel- equipped homes or workplaces, and electric vehicles. Participating customers will also have the opportunity to sell electricity back to the grid, or spare capacity in their vehicle battery, creating a financial income. Bosch reaches agreement with EU Commission on joint settlement of antitrust proceedings
Stuttgart and Brussels – The EU Commission today imposed fines totaling 151.5 million euros on a number of automotive suppliers. The fines relate to anticompetitive practices between 2000 and 2011. These practices concerned certain spark-plug and brake products. The case, which has now been closed by the EU Commission, is one of a series of investigations

CPI part of the UK’s High Value Manufacturing Catapult has opened its new, state-of-the-art National Formulation Centre. Formulation involves the creation of multi-component, often multi- phase products, which are abundant across markets such as healthcare, food and drink and personal care. For companies developing formulated products, challenges such as up-scaling,

IC Insights Raises 2018 IC Market Forecast from 8% to 15% IC Insights’ latest market, unit, and average selling price forecasts for 33 major IC product segments for 2018 through 2022 is included in the March Update to the 2018 McClean Report (MR18). The Update also includes an analysis of the major semiconductor suppliers’ capital spending plans for this year. 2018 unit volume growth for these product segments is expected to be up only 1% and 6%, respectively. At $99.6 billion, the DRAM market is forecast to be by far the largest single product category in the IC industry in 2018, exceeding the expected NAND flash market ($62.1
billion) by $37.5 billion. Figure 1 shows that the DRAM market has provided a significant tailwind or headwind for total worldwide IC market growth in four out of the last five years. The DRAM market dropped by 8% in 2016, spurred by a 12% decline in ASP, and the DRAM segment became a headwind to worldwide IC market growth that year instead of the tailwind it had been in 2013 and 2014. As shown, the DRAM market shaved two percentage points off of total IC industry growth in 2016. In contrast, the DRAM segment boosted total IC market growth last year by nine percentage points. For 2018, the expected five point positive impact of the DRAM market on total IC market growth is forecast to be much less significant than it was in 2017.
The biggest adjustments to the original MR18 IC market forecasts were to the memory market; specifically the DRAM and NAND flash segments. The DRAM and NAND flash memory market growth forecasts for 2018 have been adjusted upward to 37% for DRAM (13% shown in MR18) and 17% for NAND flash (10% shown in MR18). The big increase in the DRAM market forecast for 2018 is primarily due to a much stronger ASP expected for this year than was originally forecast. IC Insights now forecasts that the DRAM ASP will register a 36% jump in 2018 as compared to 2017, when the DRAM ASP surged by an amazing 81%. Moreover, the NAND flash ASP is forecast to increase 10% this year, after jumping by 45% in 2017. In contrast to strong DRAM and NAND flash ASP increases,
